SUP Safety

At East Yorkshire Canoe Club (EYCC) we have a small fleet of stand up paddleboards (SUPS) to suit a variety of paddlers. Paddleboarding is a fantastic and easily accessible sport and we aim to champion safe, enjoyable paddling. Come and join us on Saturday mornings and upskill your SUPing!

Whilst paddleboarding is an amazing sport it is not without its dangers.

Every year we hear horror stories of paddle boarders (and other craft) being blown out to sea and rescued by the RNLI. There is also the risk of entrapment that can be caused by inappropriate leash wearing. We want you to have an amazing, enjoyable time doing a fantastic hobby! There is a wealth of information out there and we would really advise for you to do your own research and join a club/ have a lesson/ go out with others to improve your skills before venturing out alone or with family.

If you do go out alone or with family, here are some key tips. This list is not exhaustive, it is just some pointers, we could have written many more items!

1. If in doubt don’t go out. There’s always another day.

2. Take some lessons, either with a club or a Paddle UK registered coach.

3. Make sure you can self-rescue (climb back onto your own board).

4. Paddle within your ability.

5. Wear a properly fitting buoyancy aid (this is not the same as a life jacket).

6. Portage! Do not paddle through locks or weirs, find a safe alternative such as getting out and walking around!

7. Don’t paddle on the sea in offshore winds. If the wind is right, head to a life guarded beach, stay close to the shore.

8. Ensure you have the correct equipment, including leash, whistle and phone (in a waterproof pouch).

9. Paddle with a buddy or two.

10. Make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you’re expected to return.

If you get ill after paddling and you are ill enough to go to the Doctor or hospital tell them that you paddle and what environment. Some illnesses/diseases are waterborne and this may help your diagnosis.

Come and join EYCC if you wish to: learn and develop your skills; gain board confidence; learn to tow, self-rescue and rescue others; play some games; go on trips; and meet amazing, like-minded people.
